TIP ME TUESDAY {GUEST POST}: GET FIT. STAY FIT.

Today's post comes to us from Jane Couto of Mom Generations. A freelance writer, copywriter, editor and blogger, Jane is a graduate of Brown University {though, she spent a year at Bowdoin College which is where she met Suz} and lives in Rhode Island. Lucky for us her expertise includes health and fitness {not to mention boat loads of other things such as running, relationships and social media, for example}.

Resolutions: it seems we can’t begin a new year without them. On television, in magazines, on blogs, at holiday parties… everyone wants to know what you will change in the coming year.


Fitness goals usually top people’s lists, of course.


But fast-forward a few weeks into the new year and many people already have a laundry list of excuses as to why they haven’t stuck to their resolutions.


It’s true that family, friends, work, activities – you know, life in general – can take up so much time that it seems there’s no room to fit another thing in. But there are ways to turn fitness resolutions into long-term reality, and here are a few tips to help make that happen:




• HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE, whether this means weighing yourself regularly, keeping a food log or joining an organized weight loss program. You can also enlist the help of family and friends you trust; tell them your goals and permit them to ask you how things are going periodically. Of if you’re really brave, you can share your intentions with the world via Facebook or a blog and track your progress publicly {with help from the popular Daily Mile, for example}. The bottom line is: if you don’t have some way to check in on your progress, it will be easier to let things slide.

• GET A BUDDY. After a year and a half of intense triathlon training, I hit a bit of an exercise rut a few months ago. I found I had lost my drive and instead of looking forward to workouts, I began dreading them. Enlisting my mom as my running buddy really helped me out. Working out became enjoyable again – we talk, we laugh and we motivate each other while we run. Having a workout and/or healthy eating partner will help keep your routine fun and fresh while you work to reach your goals.

• TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT. I compete in triathlons, so I do a lot of swimming, biking and running. Having some diversity keeps things from getting mundane, but every once in a while I still like to mix it up. I’ll try a kickboxing, step or weights class at the gym just to sneak something new into my exercise regimen. Adding a little variety is sure to keep you excited about working out over time.

• REWARD YOURSELF. Making the most of your healthy living victories will inspire you to keep working toward your bigger goal(s). When you hit a milestone, book a massage, make a reservation at your favorite restaurant or purchase those cute earrings you’ve been eying on Etsy.
